Theotherapy is not a new mode of counselling – it originated during the 1970s Argentinian revival, with Dr. Mario Rivera Mendez, who worked with Juan Carlos Ortiz, observing that though many people were being physically healed supernaturally, there were also many who came for prayer over and over, without any substantial change. Their problems were not physical, but psychological – Dr. Mendez' area of expertise.

He went on to author three books (e.g. Emotional Freedom, Facing Unresolved Conflicts) and to develop a course in biblically-based counselling which he called, TheoTherapy (God's healing).

Mario's son, Dr. Marc Rivera – also a qualified Psychologist and a Presbyterian minister, based in Puerto Rico – developed the course into the 5-Level model that exists today. Level V TheoTherapy is equivalent to a doctorate (TT.D), while those who are trained to Level III are qualified to counsel.

Other modes of counselling – including most Christian counselling – tend to identify emotional issues and then offer coping mechanisms; whereas TT uses biblical tools (of forgiveness, acceptance, surrender and Therapeutic Indifference – FAST) to actually resolve those relationship issues – hurts, phobias, rejection, loss, anxieties, etc. – leaving the person free of emotional triggers. Raymond has been engaged in TheoTherapy counselling since 2022, when he completed Level III training from CCI, and has seen lives impacted by these Christian principles.
